Secretary General Visits CLEOP: Milestone for Climate-Neutral Lithium Production in Hesse

Hesse, 11th of August 2025 – During a site visit, the Secretary General, Leopold Born was briefed on the progress of establishing a domestic battery supply chain. The focus was on climate-neutral lithium extraction and its processing into the final product, lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM).

CLEOP (Central Lithium Extraction and Optimization Plant) serves as the pilot facility for the planned commercial Central Lithium Plant (CLP) and delivers the first lithium produced entirely in Europe – regional and climate-neutral. The LHM is sent to our offtake partner in the battery and automotive industry for product qualification. In the first phase of the project, we aim to produce lithium for approximately 500,000 electric vehicle batteries per year.

The Secretary General’s visit highlights the importance of Vulcans project for the sustainable transformation of industry. Together with regional partners, the company is driving decarbonization forward and creating future-proof jobs in Hesse.
